Takoyaki Bento by Demi-Plum Takoyaki Bento by Demi-Plum
This was my lunch today! I wanted to try something that was not my normal style bento. So I tried out a few new things. It contains:

Top Layer:
Takoyaki! It is topped with home made Tonkatsu Sauce, Chives, and Mayo (Takoyaki is Fried Octopus Balls. It is made out of boiled Octopus tentacle and other ingredients. *Tip for frozen Takoyaki: Put them under the broiler for 3-5 minutes after warming up, it helps to give a crispy crunch to the outside while keeping the inside warm and gooey)

Bottom Layer:
Blanched Spinach with Shoyu (Soy Sauce), Sesame Oil and Seeds.
Hard Boiled Quail Eggs
Green Apple Bunny
Japanese Style Potato Salad (I hate American Potato salad so I was skeptical about this version, but it is DELICIOUS!)

If you've never had octopus it's going to be hard to understand. It also depends on what you put into them. There's the batter and usually pickled ginger, seaweed, and things like that. Then of course the octopus which is quite chewy. You top it off with tonkatsu sauce, mayonnaise, and bonito flakes.

You don't need a takoyaki maker, you can get one of those pancake ball makers that you can find at any target or even online for not a whole heck of a lot of money.

The ingredients arn't really hard to find anymore with stores starting to have international isles anymore. The hardest thing to find would be the octopus, but you could look around at your local asian markets or just plain old fish markets too.

Well I've heard of a couple places...we have a new place that opened up in town, but it doesn't carry much in the way of asian stuff. It does have mochi tho. ^-^ Then I've heard of one in a town nearby, but I've never been able to find it...and aside from that, the closest one I know of is 2 hours away...that's a long drive for just quick shopping, you know?

When I got to jungle jims it's never a quick shop. I always spend at least an hour or more in there. I think very carefully about what I'm getting.
You should look up the address of the one you haven't been able to find. That way you'll know where to look. It's at least worth a try

Well what don't you like about a normal potato salad? Like...what stuff don't you like in it?

i don't like the potatoes in cubes because they don't taste very good, slightly crunchy and too much potato. i don't like the "wet" dressings they use or a whole lot of mayo and i hate mustard. i'm also not fond of the spices they add.
thats why i like this one, not a lot of mayo, the potatoes arn't all cubed and yucky and the spices are very simple. OH! and it's not cold. if you can't tell already i don't like any kind of pasta/potato/ect salad. i do like normal salads a lot though!

lol well That makes sense. My mom's potatoes are generally pretty un-crunchy, even tho she cuts them in cubes, and she never uses mustard. Also, instead of mayo, we use miracle whip for everything because it has more flavor. I don't much like mayo myself. But my mom's is really simple...potatoes, hard boiled eggs, miracle whip and a packet of hidden valley ranch dressing mix. Sometimes she even uses two. ^-^ It's really yummy. If you ever feel adventurous and have someone that would eat it if you didn't like it, I'd suggest trying it cuz it's awesome. She uses the same ranch mix for her tuna noodle salad too. Btw, how do you make the japanese potato salad?

Miracle Whip or Mayo is fine with me since I don't hardly ever use it. Since it's pure fat i try to eat as little of it as possible. Maybe sometime I'll try it. Just because you say it's good. I got the recipe from Cooking With Dog - a channel on Youtube. It's in the "Bento" video.
