New Years Bento by Demi-Plum New Years Bento by Demi-Plum
Happy New Year Everyone! I decided I wanted my first deviation of 2011 to be a New Years Bento. But not only did I want to pay homage to the American New Year's celebration, I also thought it would be proper to also celebrate the Chinese New Year!
In America Champagne and Strawberries are a classic New Year treat. And during the Chinese New Year money is given to children. This year is also the year of the Rabbit so I thought I should mention that in my bento. The contents of this bento:

American New Year Side:
Champagne - Colby Cheese
Strawberry - Home Made Chocolate Covered Strawberry (by myself)
2011 - Nori
Background - Rice with 3 Sesame (Kuro, Shiiro, Garlic!)

Chinese New Year Side:
Year of the Rabbit - Rice ball with Colby Ears, Crab and Nori Eyes, Black Sesame Eyelashes, Nori mouth and nose, Ketchup cheeks
New Years Money - Colby Cheese, Crab String
Peaches of Longevity - Cherry Tomato, Cilantro Leaves
Base - Spaghetti with Ketchup and Pesto, Broccoli with Butter

I recently decided to get a bento book with my Christmas money and, eager to try out some of their recipes, got inspired to make this bento. The book is called Yum-Yum Bento Box and gave me the instructions for the Rabbit and Spaghetti, which I of course doctored up to match what I wanted and needed. It's a great book and I hope to get more so I can do some really awesome bento in the future!

I hope everyone's new year is filled with good food and creativity! Good Luck in the Kitchen~!

Haha >w< I don't think America has much interest overall in bento making. Especially when there are people who are so much better than myself

Thank you! I made this thanks to Pikko from Yum-Yum Bento Box. She actually tweeted my bento, which I found out from a random viewer. I was so shocked and pleased. If you haven't guessed I don't have a twitter account

You can buy bento boxes from many different sites. A few are: Jlist.com, amazon.com, and ebay.com.

If you want to learn about bento you should research it, it's not hard at all. A good blog is Lunchinabox.net. It's good for beginners. You can also learn how to make a simple bento from Cooking With Dog on youtube. There is an episode called bento in their videos.

Well, your creation impressed the author of the book! She tweeted it out, that's how I found this.

Very adorable, I wish I had the patience to do stuff like this.

Really? I didn't even know that! I feel so humbled now  the authors are so amazing, I'm following their blogs, youtube, and facebook accounts. I wish I could be as good as them someday!

It does take a lot of planning and patience. But it's worth it in the end!

She did indeed, here's a link to a screenshot of her personal Twitter feed:

She always makes those Bento boxes look so nice. I have two sets the wife and I bought, we've never really done anything nice in them

OH my gosh! I'm so excited! I never thought that Pikko would ever comment, much less expose my work! I am so touched and humbled! This year is really getting off to a good start!

She really does! And she's so creative too, especially with using things as more than one animal. I have four bento boxes right now and I'm looking for my fifth. I get bento that are all different that way whatever I'm making will have a box that will fit in it. I'm now looking for a flat bento so I can really do some charaben.

You should really give bento making a try! It's a great way to watch what you eat and also helps you to eat healthier. I really started bento my first year of college and instead of gaining the "freshman 15" I actually lost a few lbs instead. Plus bento really helps to brighten up your day when it's not going so well.
