Croissant Sammie Bento by Demi-Plum Croissant Sammie Bento by Demi-Plum
Since I made mini croissants I thought that making a sammie would be a good idea. I ended up taking one for lunch and these mini ones are the perfect size for a bento (note: get more of these!) Anyway this bento contains:

Croissant Sammie - Lettuce, Cheese, Turkey
Cherry Tomatoes
Daikon Slices
Strawberries
Grapes

Please Enjoy, I really did!

Are these things generally available in western stores?
Guess I could just improvise, but kinda want to see what the taste you created is like.

Some things are not. I have a local Asian Grocery that I go to to get some of my ingredients. I go to Jungle Jims for some as well, and the other things I find online or in my normal grocery. It depends on how your grocery is set up (internationally of course). You can always search for Asian Groceries in your area as well, you can probably find it on google by typing in asian grocery _your location_

Haha well first off you only need one bento for lunch. Having three bento is a bit much. You should find out what size bento box you should have for your height/weight/size ect. If you don't know you can find out here: [link] This is only a starting guideline. You'll have to figure out what works best for you though trial and error.

When I bought my first bento box I completely guessed on the size because I didn't really realize that there were different sizes, I was lucky to get one that was a good size for me. Consulting the chart I'm suppose to have a 600mL bento. For me personally though, I eat between 400-550 depending on what I'm making and what fits best. I have a variety of sized bentos and shapes to fit my food needs. To start off, find what size is best for you and order a bento that is about that size, you can go up or down from that point. **Note: Do not be fooled by "cute" bentos. While there are some adorable bento out there they do not always fit your needs. Consider your needs first and then pick out the patter, size, cut, whatever. You'll waste your money otherwise.

As for what you put in them, it's really up to you. What do you like? What do you feel like? Bento doesn't have to contain just Asian style foods, like the one you see here it isn't Asian just based upon the theory of "bento". You want to make sure that you're picking foods that will hold up throughout the day though. Otherwise you'll end up with a mess and not a good lunch. The general rule of bento making for nutritional value is to have all of the 5 colors in it: red, yellow, white, black, green. Not a must, but a general rule. What most beginner bento-ers don't understand is that bento is a theory and guideline for a healthy lunch, it's not a rule or law. To have a good bento you want a variety of flavors, tightly packed (so they don't spill), colorful to attract the appetite, and nutritionally balanced. <- that sentence right there is the core of bento making, learn it well.

Bento do not have to be full scale lunches either, they can be snack bento. You can get snack bento like these: [link] [link] They're small so you can take a mid morning snack and not over eat so you still can enjoy your bento. It's important to not over eat and make yourself sick though. Small portions throughout the day is more healthy than a lot in a short sitting.

I hope this helps you and answers your questions. If you have more feel free to ask me anything. No question is a "dumb" question. Beginning bento making can be confusing because you feel you have to stick to rules and regulations (like anything new), but it's really as easy as it looks. If it wasn't people like me (in other words ordinary) wouldn't be doing it!
